Today in History (1862) - The U.S. government forbids all Union army officers from returning fugitive slaves, thus effectively annulling the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 and setting the stage for the Emancipation Proclamation. On the same day in 1865, the Confederate Congress voted to enlist 300,000 black troops, granting them freedom with the consent of their owners. Lee surrendered a few weeks later. |
Depressing news on the music culture front: Billy Corgan (of Smashing Pumpkins) will soon release a book of poetry. If Corgan's verse is anything like his song lyrics....
... we're in for a shame-fest of rock star posturing as spiritually conflicted visionary. Jim Morrison's poems were generally bad, but at least most of them made no sense. Hopefully Corgan's will enjoy the same virtue. Look out, Chicago.
In other poetry news, Michael Madsen has a book of poetry as well. To jog everyone's memory, he was the actor who cut off the guy's ear in Resovoir Dogs, and is also in Kill Bill v.2.
