Moratorium on Ninth Circuit Mockery

by PG

OK, I really can't put a stop to people's picking on the Ninth Circuit, and I'll even concede that some of it is meritorious. But there is one particular complaint that's absurd, and all of the bloggers who praised George Will's rant against Reinhardt seem to have missed that. As part of his introductory paragraph on what losers the liberal 9th Circuit judges are, Will notes that 22 percent of the cases heard by Supreme Court last term were appeals from the 9th. Will fails to mention, however, that the 9th Circuit contained nearly 20% of the U.S. population as of the 2000 census, and probably has an even larger percentage today given trends on the West Coast and in Arizona.
